There are three winners of the second International Composition Competition of Sacred Music Pope Benedict XVI, dedicated to the celebrations of the 90th anniversary of the death of Giacomo Puccini ( 1924-2014 ) . First place is the Italian Francesco Stillitano in second place ( in a tie ) and the Canadian Stephen Fraser , another Italian , Fabrizio Callai , won the third place American James Christopher Godfathers . All compositions bear the same title : Requiem. The competition was attended by forty candidates from all over the world , with a " very high level of preparedness - says Lorenzo Palomo , president of the jury - and I found it really interesting the different way of interpreting religious music by competitors . Composers of various nationalities who share a love for music and especially that they know to express it in a personal way and therefore different: I am very excited about what I heard during the three days when we gathered to declare the winners . " Next to the president of the jury , Palomo , Angel English (artistic director of the competition ), Alfredo Rugeles Asuaje ( musical director of the Orchestra Simon Bolivar, Venezuela) , Jennifer Pascual ( music director of St. Patrick's Cathedral , New York) and Angelo Cavallaro (conductor ) . The score of the first prize winner will be published by the publishing house " Syllables " in Livorno and will be performed during the season 2014/2015 into one of the most important churches of the Archdiocese of New York, New York City. On April 16, 2014 ( 20 hours ) , the birthday of Pope Benedict XVI at the Basilica of Sant'Andrea della Valle - site of action in the first act of Puccini's Tosca , Verdi Chorus and soloists of the Roman Opera directed by Angelo Cavallaro , will perform the Requiem by Giacomo Puccini Requiem and the four winners .
